Hair Growth with PRP Therapy

Androgenetic alopecia, the scientific name for male or female pattern baldness, affects millions of men and women. A thick head of hair is commonly associated with youth, health, and vigor. When men and women begin to experience thinning hair or a receding hairline, their self-esteem may be consequently impacted. At Skin Savior, Dr. Richard Sherman now offers a non-surgical Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy treatment for hair restoration, allowing you to regrow your own natural hair and boost your confidence.

How does hair restoration with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy work?

The natural aging process can cause the body’s cells to become “tired” or “lazy,” resulting in reduced collagen production (a component of facial aging) as well as dormant or less active hair follicles. Pattern baldness is believed to occur when hair follicles shrink as a result of dihydrotestosterone (DHT, a derivative of testosterone). Although DHT is derived from testosterone, women are also susceptible to hair loss as a result of this androgen.

The same Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy technology that can be used to achieve facial rejuvenation through microneedling can also be used for hair restoration. With PRP Therapy, Dr. Sherman is able to locally activate the body’s natural healing processes, which can stimulate shrunken hair follicles and promote hair growth.

PRP Therapy isolates the patient’s own platelet blood cells and then reintroduces them at the hair loss site during treatment. There is minimal discomfort associated with the procedure and precautions are taken to ensure each patient is comfortable before the procedure begins. PRP injections are performed with a small needle at the level of the hair follicle throughout the scalp. The majority of injections are done throughout the frontal and vertex scalp, common areas associated with hair thinning.

What are the benefits of PRP Therapy for hair growth?

Once the cells that nourish the hair follicles have been activated, they can behave in a more youthful manner. The benefits of PRP for hair growth may include:

  • Thicker, denser hair
  • Improved quality of hair growth
  • Diminished rate of hair loss

Many patients also experience increased self-esteem as a result of new and better hair growth. Results may be further improved by combining PRP for hair growth with additional hair loss treatments, such as topical minoxidil or oral Propecia (finasteride).

Are there any side effects from PRP for hair growth?

There is a little to no downtime associated with PRP Therapy, and patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment. Patients may experience redness, swelling, or mild bruising at the injection site. To help avoid skin infection, patients are asked to avoid vigorous exercise for three days and maintain a clean scalp. Patients my shampoo once or twice daily during this period.

When will I see results from PRP for hair growth?

Many patients notice decreased shedding or hair loss within the first month after treatment. To achieve the best results, PRP treatments are performed as a series of 3-4 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Textural changes, new hair growth, and increased hair density typically occur gradually over 4-6 months. To maintain results from PRP Therapy for hair growth, patients can schedule a follow-up treatment session once every 6-12 months. Most male patients and some post-menopausal female patients also take oral Propecia (finasteride) to better maintain their results.
