Microneedling with SkinPen®

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the skin. Using the SkinPen® device by Bellus Medical, our Skin Savior aestheticians can stimulate the body’s natural healing processes as well as new collagen growth. This non-invasive procedure can be used to treat acne scars, enlarged pores, common signs of age, and more. Microneedling with SkinPen®can also be combined with a treatment called Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for enhanced skin rejuvenation.

How does microneedling work?

A topical numbing agent is first applied to the skin to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure. As the SkinPen® device is passed over the treatment area, thousands of controlled micro-channels are created on the surface, stimulating the skin. The body then heals itself with a three-phase wound repair process. During the inflammation stage, blood flow is increased and new tissue is formed. The second stage of the repair process is called proliferation, during which temporary collagen (type III) and elastin are created. Finally, this temporary collagen is replaced with stronger collagen (type I) during the remodeling phase, resulting in a more tightened, toned, and youthful appearance.

What are the benefits of microneedling with SkinPen®?

The SkinPen® is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device. For patients who are 22 years of age or older, microneedling can be used to address many common skin concerns, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Stretch marks

Our skilled aestheticians can use microneedling to improve the overall appearance of facial skin as well as the skin of the neck or chest (décolletage). Microneedling with SkinPen® can be performed on all skin types, and the treatment can typically be completed within 30 minutes. This treatment may also enhance the results achieved with our professional skincare products.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy utilizes the body’s own blood cells to boost the results of microneedling with SkinPen®. The platelet blood cells are first isolated from the body and then reintroduced to the treatment area during the microneedling procedure, increasing both collagen and elastin production. With PRP, patients can enjoy heightened microneedling results. Ask one of our aestheticians if microneedling with PRP is suited for your unique needs and cosmetic goals.

Are there any side effects from microneedling?

There is little to no downtime associated with the microneedling procedure. Since the micro-injuries are created in a controlled environment, no scar tissue results from this non-invasive treatment. Patients normally experience mild redness after the procedure, though this side effect typically resolves quickly. Other side effects may include temporary tenderness, itching, dry skin, or tight skin. All patients receive a Skinfuse® LIFT gel to keep the skin hydrated after their microneedling treatment.

When will I see results from microneedling?

Initial results from microneedling with SkinPen® can be seen within 3-7 days. Since collagen and elastin production typically continue to increase over time after a microneedling procedure, most patients will see improvements over the next few months. After this time, patients can enjoy a clearer, more youthful complexion.

Patients who choose microneedling to address signs of age, such as fine lines or wrinkles, may only require one microneedling treatment session. For patients who seek to diminish the appearance of acne scars, several treatment sessions may be required. During the consultation process, Dr. Richard Sherman can recommend how many treatment sessions are required to achieve your personal goals.
